NBA: Never Mind the Celtics

May 19th, 2008 · No Comments

So Paul Pierce broke out of his series long mire and poured in 41 points in another Celtics’ Game Seven win despite the King’s do-it-all 47-point performance. A raucous crowd that wailed ceaselessly, the aforementioned duel, a nip-and-tuck, do-or-die, win-or-go-home contest and a resurrected P.J. Brown combined to generate a memorable Sunday afternoon for the [...]

NBA: Exploring the Spectrum

May 14th, 2008 · 1 Comment

In the midst of a second round with three series very much in doubt, the idea of branding a team a certifiable success or disappointment might appear dated in a week. But every writer confident of his or her observations must avoid conventionality and embrace a daring demeanor. Well…almost.
The Celtics could turnaround their shoddy road [...]

A Smoking Ban Concession

May 11th, 2008 · No Comments

Looks like all you dirty smokers will get a break after all with the take-no-prisoners Iowa smoking ban. From last Thursday’s Iowa Independent:
As the state works out final details on how Iowa’s sweeping statewide smoking ban will be implemented on July 1, one official tells Iowa Independent that bars will be allowed to have patios [...]

More 3rd District Thoughts: No Debate, More Endorsements, and the “Fallon Loophole”

May 11th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Update (5/12): Previously, I wrote that I’M for Iowa was “arguably in violation of campaign law” for promoting Fallon’s congressional campaign through e-mails. In actuality, this does not appear to violate any law, and the controversy concerns questions of ethics, not legality, from Boswell’s camp.
Update #2 (5/12): Fallon paid himself  a salary in the months [...]

NBA: The Show Rolls On

May 5th, 2008 · No Comments

Ok, so I’m a tad late with my second round predictions but I will redeem my tardiness with pinpoint predictions as well as scintillating writing and oops-I-crapped-my-pants worthy humor. Which has me thinking, I have not watched SNL since Will Ferrell departed to star in such classics as Elf and Bewitched, but I still recall [...]

Ames Libertarians Kick Off Statehouse Bids

May 1st, 2008 · 4 Comments

If I’ve learned anything about libertarians, it’s that they know how to have a good time. There’s a place on the 500 block of Hayward Avenue in Ames called the Liberty House II, ground zero of my ties to the university libertarian community here and the locale of more than a few heavily intoxicated nights [...]

Fallon Receives National Endorsement from Progressive Democrats of America

April 25th, 2008 · 1 Comment

That’s according to his campaign’s latest media release. Ed Fallon (who, for any newcomers to the site, is challenging Democratic Representative Leonard Boswell in Iowa’s 3rd district primary) received DFA’s Des Moines chapter endorsement in March. I’ve got to bounce in a minute, so I’ll just share with you some excerpts from the e-mail:
“PDA’s priorities [...]

Al Gore Endorses…

April 24th, 2008 · 2 Comments

…Leonard Boswell. He must have been sent one of the Boz’s Nader mailers. From my e-mail inbox today (minus the formatting):
Dear Friend,
There is an important election coming up in Iowa and I’m calling on all democrats to stand up for someone who has stood up for you time and time again. My friend, Leonard [...]

Boswell’s Nader Mailer (Take Two)

April 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

This is starting to get a little ridiculous. Thanks again to desmoinesdem at Bleeding Heartland:
Which Iowa candidate helped Ralph Nader elect George Bush…
THAT’S RIGHT.
Ed Fallon helped Ralph Nader elect George Bush…
When Ralph Nader said there was no difference between Al Gore and George Bush, Ed Fallon believed him. In 2000, Fallon endorsed and actively campaigned [...]

The Inevitable Becomes Inevitable-er: Clinton Can’t Win

April 22nd, 2008 · 3 Comments

Update (4/23): You wouldn’t know it from watching the atrocious TV coverage, but it’s looking like Clinton’s Pennsylvania victory is pretty marginal (thanks again to DailyKos).
Update #2 (4/23): Apparently the Pennsylvania secretary of state’s numbers were wrong in the above link. The actual victory looks to be 9.2 percent, 54.6 to 45.4. And while I’m [...]
