September 19th, 2012 · 4 Comments

Nate Logsdon is the cofounder of the Maximum Ames Music Festival and president of Maximum Ames Records.

Ames is blessed with active local booking agents and promoters who regularly put on shows in venues around Ames and Iowa. Maximum Ames Music Festival is bringing together twelve different local promoters who are each hosting their own concerts and showcases during MAMF. Over the four days of the festival, over 130 acts will playing at two dozen venues all over Ames. Putting on all of these shows over the four days of the festival is truly a community effort. Here are the individuals and organizations, other than the Maximum Ames Music Festival booking staff, who are putting on shows during this full weekend of events.

Caleb Swank – Vinyl Unplugged @ Vinyl Cafe

w/ H.D. Harmsen, Dear Rabbit, Derek Lambert, Lesbian Poetry

The local promoter and hustler Caleb Swank recently kicked off a brand new project of Maximum Ames, the Iowa Music Store, which is a storehouse of all-Iowa music that delivers local orders by bicycle. In his spare time (just kidding, he has no spare time) he booked this killer unplugged show at Vinyl Cafe featuring four phenomenal songwriters.

Mickey Davis – Electronic Music Showcase @ Pixels

w/ TIRES, Olsen Twinns, Ex-Action Model, Thieves Breaking Into Buildings

The Des Moines native Mickey Davis goes to school in the Twin Cities but he still stays very active in the Iowa scene and he curated this monster electronic showcase at the Campustown independent game store Pixels. Unique yet perfect space for this lineup. Bounce back and forth between this show at the show at The Space at the same time, you’ll love both.

Kinky Kyro – Bootytronic Presents: THE END @ DG’s Taphouse

The final edition of the long-running Bootytronic dance party series. It’s a formal. You must attend this. Kinky Kyro is classy party-starter whose done a ton for Ames, this will be a celebration of that party-heritage.

Alicia Hendershot – DG’s Taphouse

There will also be two other shows at DG’s during the fest and for good reason: this has become the premier rock club of Ames thanks to the prolific booking agent Alicia Hendershot who has brought an ambitious list of artists to the club, including Trampled By Turtles, Railroad Earth and an upcoming show with Leftover Salmon.

FACES – Bandshell Park

FACES (Families of Ames Celebrating Ethnicities) is a long-running local event that we are proud to partner with. The show features a rich cross-section of local cultural traditions all one iconic stage at Bandshell Park.

Ames British Bike Festival – Char’s

3:00 – 5:00 pm – Obsidian’s Dream

This is the first year of this event hosted by The Chip Shop and Ames British Foods. The Chip Shop is an authentic fish-and-chips diner in the back of the South Ames gas station Char’s. This is a day-long gathering of British motorbike enthusiasts that will feature the local jam band Obsidian’s Dream in the afternoon. Try the fish-and-chips and bangers-and-mash for sure.

Phoenix L’Amour – Phoenix L’Amour Presents: VARIETEASE! Featuring – Trouble Lights (ALBUM RELEASE SHOW)

Trouble Lights (Album Release Show), Little Ruckus’ Stay Free Weird Life Liberation Army Uniform Showcase, Mae the Force, Tyona Dean Diamond, Phoenix L’Amour, Musette the Mistress of Mischief and hosted by Boone County Comedy

Phoenix L’Amour is a force to be reckoned with in Central Iowa, a promoter with a vision and a mission. She curated this outrageous variety show which will include burlesque, drag, comedy, fashion and culminate in the Trouble Lights album release party.

The River Monks – The Space for Ames

The River Monks, Great American Desert, MRNASTI, The Host Country

The Des Moines folk-pop heroes The River Monks love being from Iowa and we love them for loving it. We invited Ryan of the Monks to put together an all ages show and he organized this killer show.

Jay Parry – Ames Poetry Revival @ The Space for Ames

Ames Poetry Revival is an influential force in Ames culture thanks to the persistent work (and open mind) or promoter Jay Parry. He will be hosting this all ages celebration of Ames’ underground literary scene.

Paul Hertz – Ambient and Experimental Showcase @ First Baptist Church

Paul Hertz, Stratum, Alex Body, Juxwl

Paul Hertz earned a Masters Degree in Mathematics from Iowa State but then chose to dedicate himself to music. He’s a composer, an organist and an inventive keyboard improvisor with a passion for new sounds and strange art. He booked this showcase in a church in order to use its excellent organ and then put together a solid and diverse lineup of electronic, ambient and experimental music. This is one of the most distinctive and unusual shows on the whole festival, recommended for the musically adventerous.

Omens – Hardcore and Punk Showcase @ Zeke’s

Motivated, Omens, Series, Strike 3, Scarlet Isis

An important part of the Iowa rock scene is the dedicated punk and hardcore community. That community is growing in central Iowa and we invited Aaron Hollander of the heavy Des Moines band Omens to put together a representative lineup of Iowa punk. This is an all ages show and will sound great through the very pro system at Zeke’s.

Daniel Bosman – Scented Vinyl @ Vinyl Café

with guests Patrick Tape Fleming & Mickey Davis

Daniel Bosman is a radio DJ and Iowa music fan from Des Moines who for years hosted a sort of live-radio podcast at Mars Cafe in the Drake neighborhood. He’s reviving the series for MAMF with this edition at Vinyl Cafe (suitably) and will be spinning alongside Patrick Tape Fleming (of the PCC) and Mickey Davis (of Olsen Twinns).
