Bill Doss, who co-founded the Athens, Georgia-based Elephant 6 Recording Company in Denver 21 years ago and played in The Olivia Tremor Control and The Sunshine Fix, has died at the age of 43. According to the Athens-Clarke County coroner, Doss passed away yesterday and his death is being investigated. OTC’s official website, which appears to be experiencing server problems right now, confirmed the unfortunate news this morning.
Patrick Tape Fleming, of central Iowa’s Poison Control Center, has had ties to the Athens music scene since Elephant 6 band The Music Tapes played a show in his kitchen 12 years ago in Ames. “There’s always kind of a magic vibe when you go to Athens,” Fleming told me two weeks ago. “It’s the same kind of vibe I think people in Ames and Des Moines are getting now.”
My hero has passed away.. Bill Doss is one of the greatest songwriters ever.. He and his band the Olivia Tremor Control’s 2 albums has been my hugest musical inspiration in my life.. I have been lucky enough to sing with them on stage and Bill even joined the Poison Control Center on stage for his song Jumping Fences on tour in 2009. He was one of the nicest people I have ever met, and I’m glad I got to see the band on his 40th birthday last year.. Above are a couple photos of Bill and I..
