The second annual KURE Fest is coming up on Thursday, October 27, at the M Shop. The fest is in its second year. Last year, the event featured a big lineup of local talent. This year, the organizers decided to go for some national talent and managed to get the awesome bands Neon Indian and Kreayshawn on the bill to headline.
Casey Petrashak is a DJ at the station and one of the organizers of the event. He hopes KURE Fest will be a fun show, as well as a way to raise awareness of the station.
“We wanted to just step it up this year because we wanted to make sure people know they could come and do work here and get good experience here at KURE and in Ames,” Casey said.
The students who run the station will be on hand to promote KURE and distribute a flyer that advertises ways you can listen to KURE and get involved at the station.
One of the local bands this year is the up-and-coming duo TIRES. The band is a collaboration of the seasoned local rock artists Phil Young and Jordan Mayland. Phil and Jordan both play in Nuclear Rodeo and the Wheelers, among many other Iowa bands.
Phil is a big Neon fan and he’s excited about the growth of KURE Fest. “I think it’s pretty impressive that there’s enough steam behind it to increase it to that level,” he said.
The other local, Parlours, will play an acoustic set to open the show. They have been on a roll this year. Their music has been used on a national TV show, they killed it at 80/35, and their beautiful music video for the song “I Dream of Chicago” is a local hit. The members of Parlours are, like TIRES, some seasoned veterans of Iowa rock, including Scott Yoshimura of The Envy Corps. Most of the band members were also in the classic local act General Sherman.
The lineup is great; this show is just gonna rule. Darren Hushak, who is a DJ and station director at KURE, booked the show and is expecting a big night. “Its gonna be an awesome show, its gonna be packed. People should show up early,” he said.
