Phoenix L’Amour is leading a burlesque revival in Central Iowa, adding a flavor of risqué fun to the nightlife. Phoenix L’Amour is the stage persona of Erin O’Grady, a student in Creative Apparel Design at Iowa State. Her act certainly features creative apparel, as well as its artful removal. She performs a well-choreographed striptease, using really well-made and inventive costumes. Her shows are bawdy yet classy and she definitely brings a party atmosphere.
For the past three months she’s been hosting monthly burlesque shows at Vaudeville Mews in Des Moines. She brings touring burlesque and dance acts to the venue and organizes variety shows in which she and others perform. The next one is June 24.
She has also been a featured performer with the traveling musical comedy troupe Super Happy Funtime Burlesque. She’s done Midwest tours with the band before and will be performing with them at the Des Moines Social Club on June 11. And the band is working up a live version of one of her songs for some dates she’ll be playing with them in September.
Her goal is to help build a burlesque scene in Central Iowa. Her shows around Ames and Des Moines have been growing. “It’s starting to work out just the way I had planned it,” she said.
She’s eager to collaborate with other people who are interested in burlesque too. She’s looking for folks who’d like to be a part of a street team for shows and she’d also like to eventually have a house band.
And beyond that she’s up for teaching and mentoring other people who want to learn the art of burlesque performance. “I want other people to learn it and love it like I do,” she said.
