This winter, Iowa State University will hold the first ever marathon in State Gym. Sixteen hundred long distance runners from around the nation are expected to attend the monumental event. Long time marathoner and long distance runner Teren Jameson said, ”I ran the Chicago marathon recently and I’m very excited to have the opportunity to run the State Gym marathon at Iowa State. It’s truly a challenge. A challenge that I will survive!” Runners will have to complete an astounding 390 laps before finishing the race. Medics will be on the scene in case runners develop vertigo. The winner will receive a trophy donated by those past and present dedicated runners of State Gym. After completing the 390 laps, the runners will be tested on their ability to walk in a straight line. A gift certificate to Hickory Park will be given to the runner that shows the greatest balance and composure. When asked why she chose to hold this winter running event at State Gym rather than Lied Recreation Center, organizer Jenny Sarison said, “State Gym just has more history. We wanted to bring people back to the roots of Iowa State. No fancy new equipment, just running. The way it should be.” Spectators should get there early because seats will fill quickly.
